Games within games, is a key to improvement in grappling. BJJ is like a russian nesting doll, there's the overarching giant game of mercy and within that are smaller and smaller games. If you can win each of the smaller games consistently, not only will you be more successful, but it is a key to getting better faster. As you advance, a grip, a foot placement, and how you hold your weight can make all the difference in a match. The faster you are able to understand your positions and win each exchange, you'll be much happier with your grappling. The more you dissect the things you are doing, the better you can understand how to be successful. If you aren't dissecting the parts of grappling in your training, use whatever open mat time you have to place boundaries on yourself and develop the best understanding you can of the positions you commonly end up in.
