Chuva Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Meet Mark Christian,

Owner

When you step onto the mats at Chuva Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you are training under a system built on decades of elite lineage, technical iteration, and a deep passion for the art of human movement. Founded by Professor Mark Christian, Chuva BJJ represents the intersection of old-school self-defense principles, modern competition-tested mechanics, and a personalized approach to martial arts instruction right here in the Research Triangle.

A Foundation Built on Classic Technique

Mark’s journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu began in the high-intensity heat of Arizona. From white belt through brown belt, his foundational technique was forged under the direct guidance of Richard Bueno, Brian Ogule, and Dusty Alexander—all high-level black belts under the legendary Master Pedro Sauer. This specific lineage placed an unwavering emphasis on leverage, efficiency, posture, and precise body mechanics, ensuring that technique always triumphs over raw physical strength.

As his game evolved, Mark continued to push his competitive and technical boundaries under Sal Flores and world champion Augusto "Tanquinho" Mendes at Pallaton BJJ. Training alongside world-class athletes refined his understanding of modern guard dynamics, pressure passing, and high-stakes tournament strategy, rounding out his skillset into a dangerous, well-balanced game.

Mastery, NYC, and the Danaher Influence

In 2017, after years of dedication, rigorous testing, and relentless mat time, Mark earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. Shortly after receiving this honor, he relocated to New York City to teach full-time and immerse himself in one of the world's most competitive martial arts landscapes.

During his time in New York, Mark trained extensively with the Bronx Martial Arts team and spent significant time learning within the renowned system of John Danaher. This period radically transformed his approach to teaching. By absorbing Danaher’s systematic, analytical breakdown of submission grappling—specifically regarding leg locks, back takes, and positional control—Mark synthesized classic Sauer-lineage fundamentals with cutting-edge submission systems.

Bringing World-Class BJJ to the Triangle

Today, Professor Mark Christian brings this unique hybrid methodology to North Carolina through Chuva Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Whether you are a complete beginner looking to get into shape, a practitioner seeking practical self-defense, or an advanced competitor aiming to sharpen your mechanical details, Mark’s coaching offers a structured, safe, and highly effective environment for growth.

Outside the academy, Mark holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking, a background that heavily influences his cerebral, detailed approach to martial arts. He views Jiu Jitsu much like fine art: a discipline requiring patience, precise execution, spatial awareness, and endless creative problem-solving.
