Grappling is a zero-sum game, like all sports. I win because you lose. So it stands to reason that the more I allow you to do, the more likely I am to lose. It is not only about stopping what the other person is doing though; we also must impose our will onto them. This is true in sport, and it is true in self-defense. I must harm them so that they cannot harm me. The key is that you must dictate the situations, in the street that could be completely disengaging and running (probably the smart plan) in sport that is less possible. In this instance you must find a way to move the circumstances in your favor. The entire goal is that you are more comfortable than your opposition. If that is not how you feel then you have to reevaluate what you are doing. You are working against another sentient being and therefore you will not achieve this goal 100%, but by understanding and seeking to be 51% or more in control of each engagement you stand a better chance of a positive outcome.
