There’s a big difference between what we want to do, what looks cool, and what’s successful. I think this is the root of the issue with YouTube grappling. Things that are flashy get more views and therefore get put in front of us more whether they work or not. This then gets coupled with whether we have the capability physical or skill wise to execute what we’ve seen. This requires incredible self-awareness which is not easy to develop. So, then the barometer we use becomes what works at the highest level. We determine this by watching altercations in competition or otherwise. The catalyst of this post for me was this past weekend's UFC where we saw a Dagestani approach to MMA grappling utilized by non-Russian fighters. It wasn’t what the casual fan wants to see, but it is how we must approach fighting as submission-oriented people.
