I think one of the hardest hurdles for people to get over (especially men) when it comes to grappling is inadequacy or weakness. When you walk in the door and you realize there are people who look like Mikey Musumeci that can take you down pin you and you can’t do anything about it, it’s uncomfortable. When you walk into a Jiu Jitsu room and you see that there are just normal people and sometimes children who can physically dominate you, how do you handle it? That is the genesis of leave your ego at the door. None of us want to lose, but throwing a child across a room by the lapels doesn’t prove you can fight. What are you able to do against any person you meet? You probably will not ragdoll someone who is 400lbs, so that is no longer part of your arsenal. If you actually want to improve in anything you need to take risks. One of those risks is seeing your deficiencies. Stagnation comes from a lack of improvement, hopefully you decide to lean into things that are uncomfortable, because otherwise you will always be where you are now.
