I just watched the World Championships this weekend, and we’re all soft. The desire to win and the toughness puts the general state of Jiu Jitsu in America to shame. I saw Megaton at nearly 60 years old get pissed off because he lost to Andy Murasaki. Elizabeth Clay hobbled her way out to her division final and fought for 10 minutes on what was clearly a severely injured ankle. Gutemberg Pereira, hopped his happy ass to the center of the mat on one foot even though he couldn’t compete to respect his opponent getting his hand raised in the absolute finals. Nolan Stuart kicked Eric Munis in the shin multiple times in the course of their match and nobody got in a fist fight. This is what you’re walking into if you actually want to compete at a real level these days and people like this use local tournaments to boost their skill level. We are exiting the age of casual competition, you’re either serious or you risk getting hurt. Training is really fun, training to compete is not, most are not capable of the latter.
