Our brains are attracted to things that are concrete. One answer, set in stone, that we all know to be true, but that’s not how the world works, and it’s not how Jiu Jitsu works. We have scientific “theories” that we all accept as fact regarding our daily lives. It’s likely that a lot of them are true, but it’s also possible that 200 years from now, nothing we believe now will have merit. Jiu Jitsu is no different, there are no “right” answers, only the answers that work best for you. Every decision that you make on the mats has consequences, if you know what they are and how to avoid the pitfalls, then you can do a lot of things that traditionally would be frowned upon. When I look at Garry Tonan or J-Rod, that’s not a recommended style for most people, but it works for them. That’s what matters, in truth this is a highly individualistic activity and the goal is to maximize your skills, not mimic mine or someone else’s.
