I think a lot of people want to play specific things because they are in fashion, but that doesn't mean those games suit what they are able to do. My legs are short, so I cannot play spider guard on many people. Sometimes I will use it, but it's rare. The same goes for hip bump sweep, the people I've seen be more successful with it were longer framed (minus Dusty, but he was successful for other reasons). I'm a denser person with reasonable flexibility and shorter limbs, so I seek out people who have one if not all of those qualities. I base my game on what people who look like me do at the highest level. As much as I may want to, I can't really base my game on Craig Jones, Felipe Andrew, and Eric Muniz. I can base my game on Marcelo Garcia, Rodolfo Vieira, and Gustavo Batista. Even Tainan Dal Pra, Nick Rodriguez, and Andy Murasaki are people I can appropriate pieces from to fit my game. The base layer of what you do in jiu jitsu and grappling will be similar to people who look like you. If you want suggestions on who to look at, let me know.
