Physicality is a big part of early success in grappling. If you’re timid or have a hard time imposing your will on others, that’s a big hurdle to clear. It’s not that you can’t do Jiu Jitsu if you’re not aggressive, it’s just harder in the beginning. You have to build a technical skill set to combat physicality, and that takes time, which means you take beatings. I took a lot of beatings in the beginning, it happens. The goal is to identify what your attributes and abilities are and build from there. If you are less physically gifted, find ways to make people play to your strengths. If you are more physically gifted, use it to your advantage. In either case whatever your strengths, the goal of Jiu Jitsu is to be tactically intelligent with the tools you have. Worry only about whether you have improved, and the success will come.
