It is critical that you know where you are in relation to other things as a martial artist. In a confrontation I need to know where I am in relation to my opposition, other people, and objects in the environment. Even in a competition setting I need to be aware of the perimeter of the mat both offensively and defensively as mat boundaries can be used to strategic advantage. In the room this is a skill you can and should work on. You are not ever given limitless room to grapple, and common courtesy would suggest that if you’re rolling like a crazy person, you go back to your designated area and not disturb others. If you’re fleeing the mat or running into things while rolling consistently, you are doing something wrong which you can and should fix. Spatial awareness is part of the game, don’t neglect it.
