The basis of how we do classes is working on how you as the student solve a particular problem. You are given a task and there are a multitude of options for how to accomplish that task. In the long term it is better for your grappling to be able to analyze something conceptually and dissect it in the moment than have to go through a rolodex of information looking for the solution you were taught on a random Tuesday three years ago. My job is not actually to force feed techniques, but to facilitate learning. Ask questions, do research, find someone who wants to drill with you at open mat, you are not limited in how you are able to learn. I have been teaching this way for a year now and one of the biggest benefits is that I have seen people find solutions for themselves, they can learn effective grappling organically and independent of instruction when provided with guidance. It is difficult because it is abstract, however because it is abstract, it also leads to more rapid improvement.
