Small things make a big difference in Jiu Jitsu, but you don’t really appreciate them until you do. I had a lot of those moments training in New York, but there are two that really stick out. One was why you don’t cross your feet in a closed guard armbar, and the other was that all guard passes are essentially one of three things. I was a black belt training for 15 years when I had these epiphanies. I only started to have a decent north south choke probably 18-19 years into Jiu Jitsu. The fine tuning never stops and a lot of the time it’s only a really small adjustment that changes your success rate.
