If you’re trying to do something difficult, sometimes it’s beneficial to break it up into pieces. The same can be done with grappling. If the goal is up/down pass/stop and you are on the bottom, goal number one is keep them in front of you. Goal number two would be make connections. Goal number three to infinity would be dealer’s choice until you either stopped them or they passed. The overarching goal of bottom in pass/stop is to retain guard, and use it to mount offense. If we look at a singular complex move, the berimbolo, we can break it into smaller goals. Let’s just start in De La Riva guard, if you didn’t get there, don’t worry about the berimbolo just yet. So if we want to berimbolo, we need to sit our opposition to their butt and maintain connection with our hips. If we stay connected and sit them down, we can then invert under to go to the back or come on top with a leg drag. Breaking things down into essential components can alleviate the daunting feeling that accompanies some things. Think about the pieces of what you want to accomplish and see if that helps you achieve the whole.
