As I talked about the other day, there’s really not a lot you actually need to know to do Jiu Jitsu. It’s pretty basic anatomy and physics plus common sense. We must assume that the grappling we have now began as something rudimentary and through placing rules, restrictions, and parameters on these activities we have the combat sports of today. Sometimes in passing on our own personal experience, we forget the original intention. The base principles of what we do are inflict damage on them and minimize the damage they do to us. The question you have to ask yourself is in my current situation can I inflict damage? If not can I protect myself? A negative answer to both of these questions means you need to change something. That is the root of martial arts.
