I think people make grappling more complicated than it is, or maybe I've just lost sight of how complicated it is. I often find especially not that I implement task-based games newer people end up giving away the end goal to the other person. Almost all the time the first priority is use the initial position as your base, if all else fails get back to where you started. If you began on top stay on top and on bottom always improve your position or submit. Don't lose ground unnecessarily. Risk of injury would be a reason to lose ground just to clarify. That is the primary, after that you probably only have a limited of scope of options, so simplify that and so on. In your brain, make the map and then follow it.
