This is a really big part of grappling, self-defense, and martial arts for law enforcement. The idea that I’m going to hurt you just enough so that you do what I want. You don’t have to believe in it, but you probably use this concept and if you don’t, you should. Pain compliance is using anything that causes the other person to be uncomfortable enough that they react in a predictable way which you use to your advantage. This is usually some type of pressure. Splitting the legs in a single underhook pass is a type of pain compliance. Shoulder pressure and high mount are also pain compliance. In wrestling a lot of how you pin someone is pain compliance. I feel like annoyance could also fall into the pain compliance category, which puts a lot of standup grappling in the pain compliance category. Overall, make people uncomfortable and you can get them to make mistakes.
