It is difficult to stand if your feet can’t touch the ground. One of the developments in Jiu Jitsu in the last few years is that you don’t have to accept being the bottom player and can “just stand up”. A solution to this, albeit not an easy one, is to keep the bottom player’s feet off the ground. Somewhat similar to Randy Couture’s ground and pound where he would keep people in bottom half guard, as long as we have one foot elevated, they cannot build height. It’s easier said than done, but it is a big part of following the evolution of submission grappling.
