When I first started doing Jiu Jitsu, you didn’t have to train that much and you could still be competitive at lower levels. That’s not really the case anymore. Even at local tournaments, I hear white belts saying they’re in the gym 4-6 days a week. People are taking this very seriously very early. Maybe they will burn out, but if you’re going out there not training very much, that’s going to be difficult. Jiu Jitsu as a hobby is now totally separate from Jiu Jitsu as a sport which is separate from elite level competition. It’s okay to not compete, but if you choose to compete, it must be taken seriously.
