I’m a mediocre black belt, and so are most black belts, that’s how the world works. Being the best at something is incredibly difficult, and more often than not people who operate at an elite level have deficiencies in other areas of their lives. I greatly admire the people who have the sort of singular focus that allows them to achieve greatness on that scale, but I was never that guy. I tried, I put more effort into grappling than anything else in my life for a long time and that allowed me to do some really cool things, I wouldn’t change it. You just have to ask yourself from the very beginning, how do your expectations align with your drive? Being a colored belt world champion is astonishingly difficult even at the masters level these days. Is the sacrifice worth it for you? I don’t know, what I do know and what I’m constantly trying to understand more and more is how to get there. Mediocrity is normal, to a certain extent it means that you have other priorities and that’s okay as long as you don’t expect more of yourself.
