As much as you may like your coach and your coach may like you, it’s not really a friendship, it’s a transactional relationship. If they want you to only wear their gear, that is their livelihood, their business. They feed themselves and take care of their family on things like that. Maybe they’re making a profit, maybe they aren’t. There are many factors to consider when you run a business and unless you’re in it, you can’t know for certain what drives the reasoning for the decisions gyms make. I heard someone say that a gym in town charges $220/month and they have one adult Jiu Jitsu class per day. As a consumer that seems crazy, as a business owner I know that higher rates mean less hassle. At $220/month you only need 15 students to clear $3000. If you add merchandise and consumables profit is much easier to attain. I really don’t think most Jiu Jitsu coaches are trying to swindle anyone, they just want to be fair to themselves.
