Direct instruction isn’t bad, I know that is blasphemous to a lot of “ecological” people, but if you read the books by Rob Gray, even he says that direct instruction is sometimes necessary. There is teaching involved in being an ecological coach. The real issue of direct instruction is the separation of the activity and the action. I would even venture to say that walking someone through a pathway is okay but relentlessly drilling that pathway with a singular expectation is problematic. Unfortunately, or fortunately, doing the thing you are actually trying to do and failing is a better path to success than creating a false confidence by perfecting it without resistance. I know that live all the time is hard, but your ability to act against others improves faster by always being in the game.
