Are we psychos? I think I have to come to the conclusion that we are. I think in becoming a human on the Jiu Jitsu mats I became unaware of what real people are like. My examples were people who had knee surgery and came to train with a full immobilization brace on their leg from ankle to hip. I would see people have their joints dislocated, they’d pop them back in and keep going. Hell, I broke my hand, kept rolling, went to sleep, took a seminar, took a nap, and then finally went to the doctor. I also came back to training two weeks after having my gallbladder removed. I have competed on popped ankles and knees, rolled with varying types of “minor injuries”. It’s really hard for me to reconcile the Jiu Jitsu that I came up with and the mindset of today. I think a lot of the people I came up with are the same way. I can acknowledge that being the type of person that could dislocate their shoulder, tie their arm in their belt, and keep rolling is weird, but maybe sometimes a little more of that energy wouldn’t be so bad.
