Coaches aren’t magicians or mind readers. If you don’t show up to class, they can’t make you better. If you eat all the things, no matter what they do, you won’t reach your fitness goals. If you don’t ask the questions, you won’t get the answers. Personally, I do my best to design classes that are beneficial to the overall skill of the room. If you only show up to open mat, you miss out on the true skill acquisition. I have told this story before, that at purple belt I got frustrated with feeling like I wasn’t working on any new skills. My coaches response was, take matters into your own hands, challenge yourself, put limits on yourself, set your own goals outside of the ones we give you. Long story short, you’re in charge of your Jiu Jitsu no matter where you train. Your coach is only a minimal part of bringing out the desired results.
