A repeatable end result is better than a repeatable process to get there. No movement is ever the same. Even though the difference seems unintelligible, our bodies may be economical about how things get done, but not robotic. So, because our bodies never move the same way twice, expecting someone else’s to is a tall ask. In sports we often try to train people with a “right way” in mind, but the actuality is we should be looking to funnel people into a way that works for them while accomplishing the task. I think a good example outside of grappling is batting stances in baseball. At the professional level when I was a kid, there was a huge variety in stances. Both Juan Gonzalez and Jeff Bagwell were very adept at hitting home runs, but they looked completely different standing at the plate. That’s the example to follow, what works for me may not work for you, but as long as you’re accomplishing the task, why should I care?
