You can be good in any area of grappling you choose. You just have to work on it. I taught myself x-guard. It wasn’t something that my coaches really emphasized or spent time on. First I saw it in Grappling magazine and then I bought Marcelo Garcia’s x-guard book at Pans one year. What followed was me crashing, burning, and studying until it became a major part of my game. If you’re not good at something, it’s because you’re not making the effort to be good at it. If you’re bad at sweeping, give yourself more opportunities to sweep. If you can’t submit people, be willing to take more risks. Lean into what you are bad at so you can become better.
