In order to grapple, we have to be attached to people. If I am not holding onto someone I’m not really grappling. This becomes most important when playing guard against a standing opponent. Being able to attach in a way that keeps you safe and makes them uncomfortable is paramount to success. It’s not just that you attach, but also how you attach that becomes important. Lazy connections are easily defeated, which gets our guard passed. This is another zero-sum situation, I impose my will on them to protect myself. Be conscious of what’s effective and what’s not as you roll and find out why.
