I think I saw it on a catch wrestling page that conditioning is a grappler’s primary weapon. If you look at successful grapplers historically this is very true. From Dan Gable to Karelin, the Mongolian judo team to Dagestani MMA fighters conditioning is key to success. Even if you are well conditioned, you still have to be smart, especially in Jiu Jitsu. You won’t make it through a three hour vale tudo fight if you don’t have both. Whatever pace we set, we should be able to maintain for whatever duration necessary. If you feel like the pace you’re going at is killing you at three minutes, then you might want to slow your pace or up your conditioning. There’s a reason why old guy Jiu Jitsu is smash heavy, dynamic movement is not conducive to maintaining energy levels. Better conditioning, better pace, or if you’re feeling real crazy, both.
