First and foremost, I think we have to acknowledge that CJI is best as a normal tournament and not a team competition. Overall, the matches weren’t that exciting, a lot of the athletes looked flat, and it just all seemed very convoluted. The benefit of the quintet format was we got to see multiple smaller guys make some of the +99 guys look silly, and we all want that in Jiu Jitsu. Unfortunately, we also saw the need for a take it and break it mentality in professional Jiu Jitsu with multiple phantom taps leading to controversy. To go along with that, it’s very clear that “professional Jiu Jitsu” is a far cry from other professional sports and maybe we should come up with a different term until we can put out a better product to an international audience.
