We have talked about the relationship friction has to control for grappling. One of the main elements that determines control is chest pressure. If I can get past the knees, put both shoulders flat on the mat, and connect chest to chest as the top player, I have made my life so much easier. So as the bottom player, I must keep the top player below my feet, below my knees, below my hips, elbows, and hands. I must control the space between my pelvis and arm pit and keep one of my shoulder blades off of the ground. As the top player I am seeking under hooks and access to center mass. Therefore, as the bottom player over hooks without legs in front are less advantageous. All things in Jiu Jitsu can be thought of in opposites, if you know what you need to do to be successful on one side of the table, you can use those principles should you find the roles reversed.
