Our torso is a huge part of our defensive abilities in grappling. If I allow someone to control the armpit- hip space we always talk about, they are more likely to dominate the exchange. The reverse is also true if I control their torso, I stand a much better chance at success. Whether it’s the T-Rex, prayer, or some other way of looking at it, keeping our arms in and our elbows tight to our body keeps us protected while affording us a stronger base from which to escape. No matter what combat sport you partake in, keeping your arms close is always a critical piece. My center mass is mine and yours is also mine…zero sum game.
