We have talked about making people uncomfortable before. This is that no matter the position, I am always attacking, always threatening, always moving towards my advantage. Ideally, I am not regressing, that’s how people rack up 30 points to your zero. It is actually far less cardio taxing to attack than to be under attack. If I can put pressure on my opponent and they have to be under duress constantly, that’s good. Go after people, that’s how we do things.
Why do people treat holding closed guard different than holding a top position? I was just asked this, so I’ll elaborate on what I think and if you want to contribute feel free. Holding closed guard has no benefit from a self-defense or competition perspective. It doesn’t score points and it’s not a good striking position. You don’t have to earn the position the same way as a top position and it’s a regression in the positional hierarchy. Holding closed guard is presented as trying not to lose rather than trying to win. The goal everyone talks about is advancing position and closed guard is not that. If you want to play guard it should be always advancing, just like any other position. When people play closed guard that is often not the case.
Most of the things in life we don’t have to do. Nearly everything is a choice. We only “have" to do something because we don’t like the alternative. You could just not go to work, but the alternative of homelessness is less appealing, so you can change that to I get to go to work so I am not homeless. You get to go to Jiu Jitsu. Your body is capable, and you are financially secure enough that you can have a hobby. You never have to go to Jiu Jitsu, if you don’t show up, it affects you mostly. I’d like you to show up, but I still haven’t figured out how to teleport you to the mat unwillingly, so it’s on you. I don’t want to train every time I walk through the door, but more and more I’m grateful that I get to.
What is the price you’re willing to pay to achieve whatever goal you have set for yourself? If you want to be a Jiu Jitsu black belt, are you willing to show up multiple days a week forgoing lots of less painful things for a decade or longer to do that? If you want to lose weight are you willing to put your plate away before you are totally full or be in the gym instead of staying in bed? We all say we want something, but everything we want comes at the cost of something else. So what cost can you accept to reach your desired outcome?

It’s not really enough to just connect or touch someone, it has to have impact. I think maybe attach is a better use of language. You want to be irritating, a disruption. I would liken it to Velcro or jumping cholla (Arizona guy after all). It should take some work for people to free themselves from our clutches, I don’t just connect, I am stuck to you and maybe that’s distinction will help someone.
We sort of touched recently on choosing your pain. You can choose the pain of working out/ doing something physical, or you can choose the pain of a sedentary lifestyle. In the immediate sitting on the couch or staying in bed always seems like the best option and the only way that changes is if the mental pain of letting yourself or someone else down overtakes the pleasure of staying where you are. If you can make the mental switch from it’s going to suck if I go to it’s going to suck if I stay in any aspect of your life, that’s a very powerful thing. If you need motivation for anything difficult try to associate the alternative with being a cause of greater strife.
