I play a relatively similar game most of the time, but it’s not predictable. Even if I play the same positions, the attacks are different, the setups are different, you can’t say with certainty what I will do next at any given time. If a plan fails apart, that doesn’t destroy what I’m doing and if someone figures out a piece of what I’m doing I can move on. Everyone has an A game and the goal is to never leave that place, but eventually someone will make you and it’s better to have the B and C games already in place then to have to scramble as it happens. Force yourself to change your approach.

One of the greatest hurdles to your success is thinking you know better than the person that’s teaching you. We had a situation recently where a one month white belt did something to a purple belt simply because she listened. Afterwards, the purple belt was astonished that what I had been telling everyone else for years wasn’t some wizardry that only I was capable of, but simply a matter of listening and executing. If you do the things I say, you’ll get better. It’s that simple. Coaches know whether you are actually implementing what you need to and if you are not willing to listen, there’s only so far you can be helped.

Choose your own adventure What we do is uncomfortable, that is the nature of the beast. Many years ago there was a student at Pallaton who had some claustrophobia issues, something very common in Jiu Jitsu, especially for women. We got her to tell herself she was on the beach when she got to those places that made her uncomfortable, and she started sleeping people left and right. You have the ability to do the same thing. There is a significant difference between a position that is injurious and one that’s unpleasant. If you know the difference you can convince yourself of a lot. You must in fact know the difference for yourself before you try testing those boundaries.
Passing the guard becomes much harder when the person on the bottom keeps their knees to their chest or connects their knees and elbows. As the bottom player we should use this information to our advantage. The most crucial part of guard play is the involvement of your legs, if you elongate yourself as your hips get beat, you are making your life unnecessarily difficult. We know that as your limbs get further from your torso you lose strength, so why do this to ourselves? You should not be in the business of winning exchanges for other people. Jiu Jitsu is much less complicated than you want it to be. Just do the thing.
How you train is a choice you make to a certain extent, but you can only control so much. Other people will roll how they wish to roll and you have to figure out a strategy to keep yourself from going outside of your world into theirs. I advocate for offense because it hurts less, but not everyone is willing to or capable of playing that style. Overall, it doesn’t benefit us to be upset about things we don’t control, putting that into to action is much easier in theory than practice.
If you think that you’re always going to enjoy Jiu Jitsu, you’re wrong. If you want to get better at Jiu Jitsu, you have to show up anyway. I’ve thought about quitting Jiu Jitsu so many times, everyone that taught me Jiu Jitsu up to brown belt has effectively quit grappling. It’s normal to want to stop, but eventually you fall back in love with it if you keep showing up, and you are better for it. There’s a hole that not grappling leaves and it never really goes away. You don’t have to listen to me, I’m just relaying the experience of someone who has done this for the long haul.
