You don’t need all of the information to move forward. Thinking you do prevents so many interesting things. Most of the time I still don’t know where I’m going in life, I have a general idea, but all I can do is plan to the best of my ability with the information I have. Sometimes you just have to do the thing. It has to be okay to fail. It has to be okay to try. Analysis paralysis shouldn’t factor into your life anymore, just do the thing. There are very few consequences that are as large as we believe them to be, I trust you have enough common sense to not intentionally put yourself in a life-or-death situation.

Did you know that you will never have all the answers? That would be impossible if you think about it. So then perhaps we should mellow out and give ourselves grace. The answers we need will come to us when we are ready and not before. That is admittedly frustrating, especially in our society now. We all want things fast and as soon as we can. Google has spoiled our ability to be patient for information. Jiu Jitsu is antithetical to this though, I have yet to find a way to download grappling with immediate efficiency. It comes when it comes and that is both beautiful and miserable. Have fun, because otherwise you’re just getting beaten up.
Are you expressing with your true capabilities? Most of the time I am not, recently I’ve gotten better about it though. There was a long time where I felt a lot of pressure to not make mistakes, and it hindered my Jiu Jitsu. I know that if I’m in my body and out of my head my grappling is better. The freer flowing and fun I feel the easier it is for me to find attacks. It’s why if I do train with music, it’s pretty mellow, and probably also why I walk out to “Careless Whisper” the original version. I need to be reminded that it’s not that serious to perform better. Maybe you do too?
I have a hard time understanding people, a touch of the neurodiversity one might say. Grappling is a hyperfocus for me, so sometimes I’m not so easy to get along with. I often have a hard time understanding the perspectives of others who expect more than they earn, or who say one thing and demonstrate another. Honestly if you do what you say you’re going to do, and only hold the expectations matching your effort, I’m significantly less difficult. Show up and do the work, then you can worry about the results, otherwise just enjoy the journey.
I don’t usually have music on during class and apparently that has made my students averse to such a thing as well. We had a visitor come in and he wanted to play music during open mat, what I was not expecting was that my students were not about it. It was too much input. I think because I know that some people have sensory issues and music taste is just so individual, I don’t really play music in the gym. That’s not for everyone, but apparently it works for us.
It wouldn’t be a terrible idea to add getting whacked in the face to your training. That is a part of why people start training after all. You don’t have to, which is why I don’t make it a mandatory part of class, but agreeing to combat Jiu Jitsu at an open mat occasionally might change how you train a bit. I would never claim to be a proficient striker, but I’ve done it enough with people who were good strikers that I feel comfortable against the average person. If self-defense is your goal that’s what you need. If I have striking skills, I need enough grappling to not get taken down or get up if I do. If I have grappling skills, I need enough striking skills to close distance and avoid danger. Get punched, it’s good for you.

Grappling is hard enough, do not make it harder on yourself. Try to take the simplest path available at all times. There are times that path may be convoluted, but there’s no need to make it more so. I promise it will make your life so much easier if you solve everything in the simplest way possible.
This is a common one, especially when it comes to standup. If you want to throw somebody it can’t be done in halves. You either throw someone or you don’t, there is no try. Timidity is incredibly common in all aspects of Jiu Jitsu, because nobody wants to be stuck in a bad position for extended periods of time. That leads us to two things 1. Get better at getting out of bad situations so that you can confidently attempt whatever you want 2. Do the thing, consequences be damned. If you make a full effort in the room and mess it up, it’s a learning experience, but you must make an earnest attempt.
