If my hips are square to yours we are attached, we are locked together. If I do not want to be attached to you then I need to offset my hips from yours. This is true of all the grappling positions I can think of at the moment, from standing to the ground. In playing the games this week, where our hips are has become extremely important in the Q&A period. Whether it’s a top alignment (keeping my hips and chest square with their back) utilized to control, making distance to break the guard and pass, keeping our hips close to prevent the pass, or offsetting to escape Jiu Jitsu is predominantly about what’s going on below your belly button. As Chubbs says in Happy Gilmore, “It’s all in the hips”.
