It wouldn’t be a terrible idea to add getting whacked in the face to your training. That is a part of why people start training after all. You don’t have to, which is why I don’t make it a mandatory part of class, but agreeing to combat Jiu Jitsu at an open mat occasionally might change how you train a bit. I would never claim to be a proficient striker, but I’ve done it enough with people who were good strikers that I feel comfortable against the average person. If self-defense is your goal that’s what you need. If I have striking skills, I need enough grappling to not get taken down or get up if I do. If I have grappling skills, I need enough striking skills to close distance and avoid danger. Get punched, it’s good for you.
